Chab Karser had been a shuttle pilot on Coruscant for a Corporate giant.  But the Empire shut down the corporation and left many of the employees two options, look for more work or join the military.  Chab wanted to be a pilot, but not for the Imperial Navy.  Believing he was out of options, Chab joined the Alliance where he displayed superior piloting skills and was a natural in combat.  He was assigned to a Y-Wing Squadron.
